Duck canvas is double-filled: two yarns run together in the weft against one in the warp, which packs the cloth tighter and makes it markedly harder to abrade or tear. A 10 oz duck will outlast a 12 oz plain weave and costs less to ship, and no quote we have ever seen from anybody else mentions it.

The yarn matters too. Combed cotton has the short fibres removed before spinning, so it is smoother, stronger for its weight and takes a print more cleanly; carded is cheaper and fuzzier.
